The space-time geometry is determined by the energy-momentum tensor of all the matter field, by virtue of Einstein's equation in general relativity. If the Higgs field is zero in a region, then all particles (fermions + bosons) would have zero rest mass as predicted by the Standard Model. Therefore, the space-time geometry in this region will be determined by the energy-momentum tensors of zero rest mass particles as well as that of the Higgs field potential. This geometry will be fundamentally different from the case when the Higgs field has acquired the vacuum expectation value due to the spontaneous symmetry breaking, because of which fermions and gauge bosons (except for photons and gluons) acquire masses. Thus, space-time geometry is indeed linked with the dynamics of the Higgs field.
It is a scalar field or a scalar function of space-time points. That is each point in 4-D world has a number determined by the function φ(x,y,z,t). This field is not something arbitrary, rather it is characterized by it's coupling with fermions and gauge bosons. Also, the Higgs potential can only contain up to the fourth power of this field, on mass dimensional grounds, which will keep it's coupling strengths (Yukawa, quartic) dimensionless.

A more complex answer to your question can be given in terms of the representations of Poincare group SO(1,3) x R4. We label one particle quantum states by representations of SO(1,3) having specific energy-momentum which generates translation in R4. Representations are scalar, vector, spinor (left and right handed), Dirac spinor, Spin-2 graviton and so on, each representation is further labeled by it's location in R4. For example, when I write φ(x,y,z,t), it carries two meanings simultaneously. It is a Lorentz scalar which is located at the space-time point (x,y,z,t).
Higgs boson is a "missing link" in the sense that we already had observed vector and spinor representations in high energy experiments in the form of gauge bosons and fermions. The scalar representation looks simple in terms of mathematics but very complex in terms of experimental search. At last it was discovered in 2012 at CERN-LHC.
From General Relativity (GR) point of view Higgs field is matter field.
Actually form GR point of view everything is matter fields except of gravity. The gravity is space-time geometry.
Einstein equation relates geometry (Einstein tensor) with energy-momentum tensor of matter fields ("and the mass causes space-time distortion").
Contributions of Higgs field to e-m tensor are
1) Contribution of uniform Higgs background. It looks like exactly as contribution to vacuum energy or to cosmological term.
2) Contribution of Higgs field excitations (Higgs bosons) is similar to contribution from any other particles.
3) Energy of interaction of uniform Higgs background and massive particles contributes to particle masses. It contribute to e-m tensor through particle contributions.
It seems likely that the Higgs field emerges from the vacuum because it contains much more energy than many of the particles it operates on. Vacuum is governed by Heisenberg Uncertainty, suggesting that Higgs emerges briefly when needed as Z and W do and promptly returns to the vacuum as Uncertainty requires.

Space-time is properly a construct of general relativity while the higgs is a construct of quantum mechanics. It is important not to get these models mixed up. These are two different models that currently disagree at a fundamental level. we need for a theory of quantum gravity resolving these differences.

That is actually a completely misleading statement! The mass of the cold matter in the universe today, which is of relevance for spacetime, is not at all caused by the Higgs field (as far we know --- the caveat is that we don't know anything about cold dark matter). The mass of the relevant, known (hadronic) cold matter is not caused by the Higgs field, but by an entirely different (strong interaction) mechanism.

In Einstein's gravity, gravitational interaction is related with changes in the space-time geometry through Einstein's equation, Gμν + Λgμν= (8πG/c4)Tμν which contains Einstein's cosmological constant term Λ. This is a classical equation. However, there are many investigations on the subject of what could be the possible origin of Λ term in the context of a quantum field theory. In such discussions we find that Λ is related with the vacuum energy which has mainly three contributions
- Zero point energy of quantum fields
- Contribution from Higgs VEV
- QCD contribution
These contributions cancel out to give a small value of Λ. Exact mechanism of such cancellation is not known. Some anthropic arguments are generally forwarded.
The Higgs field, just like any other matter field, contributes to the RHS of Einstein's equations, through its contribution to the energy-momentum tensor of matter. The fact that it has a vacuum expectation value doesn't imply anything special. Nor does the fact that interactions with it give rise to the masses of leptons, the W and Z gauge bosons and part of the masses of the quarks.
Matter affects spacetime geometry through its energy-momentum tensor exclusively; not through its composition, i.e. the fields, that create particle states, themselves. So the Higgs field, gauge fields, spinor fields or anything else, that gives rise to the same value of the energy-momentum tensor, affects the spacetime geometry the same way.
And this energy-momentum tensor is a classical quantity; it doesn't make sense discussing any quantum properties it may have, beyond the probe approximation, because the response of the spacetime geometry to quantum properties of matter can't be computed in any controlled approximation.

Like that of any other field. How the energy-momentum tensor of a scalar field is constructed is well-known. It suffices to open any textbook on the subject.
@ Kurt Wraae Dear Kurt: The Higgs field is described by its Lagrangian density which has the usual kinetic energy term, the lambda-phi^4 term (which leads to the spontaneous symmetry breaking) and the Higgs field interaction terms with fermions and gauge bosons. From the Lagrangian density one can determine the energy-momentum tensor by varying the metric tensor. What is unique about the Higgs field is that its symmetry breaking affects the specific nature of energy-momentum tensors of all the other particles, and hence the space-time geometry itself, by virtue of the Einstein's equation.

Conformal transformation can be expressed as a set of transformations of metric tensor. In a conformally invariant theory there are no intrinsic mass/length scales. As in phenomenological studies we see mass scales(QCD scale, electroweak scale, Planck scale) such conformal symmetry should be a broken symmetry. Therefore we can hope to get useful relations involving Higgs VEV which sets an intrinsic mass scale breaking conformal invariance.

Abstract: A hitherto unexplained broken symmetry of the same kind lies behind the very origin of the cosmos in the Big Bang some 14 billion years ago. If equal amounts of matter and antimatter were created, they ought to have annihilated each other. But this did not happen, there was a tiny deviation of one extra particle of matter for every 10 billion antimatter particles. It is this broken symmetry that seems to have caused our cosmos to survive. The question of how this exactly happened still remains unanswered. Perhaps the new particle accelerator LHC at CERN in Geneva will unravel some of the mysteries that continue to puzzle us. [1] The subatomic particle ( neutrinos and Higgs) are made up of more fundamental particles called Basic Building Blocks ( B.B.Bs) which are made up of mind and mass.These B.B.Bs are divine in nature with the result they talk with each other by phenomenon called atomic transcription and translation (thought expressions). The triggering of broken symmetry is caused by atomic transcriptions. Unless the atomic transcriptions occur, subatomic particles could never exhibit phenomenon of broken symmetry . So the broken symmetry is never spontaneous. It is being misunderstood that sub atomic particles do have spontaneous activities as far as broken symmetry is concerned. Hence the Nobel prize physics 2008 awarded to this work is too early to give prize. Big Bang model of origin of the universe is discarded as this model could not reveal nature of dark matter and dark energy of the universe. It is creation physics (Hoyle –Narlikar Universe) that reveals nature of DM and DE first. Our universe is closed universe (Euclid geometry) and it is bounded by cold dark matter layer (CDM) expanding with velocity of light. They found a new particle with a mass of about 125 GeV/c2 (about 133 proton masses, on the order of 10−25 kg), which is "consistent with the Higgs boson." When protons collide, they created Massive Higgs bosons. These are positive oscillation Higgs particle (BE-4) . These Higgs boson (positive oscillation) (125 GeV/c^2) are not fundamental particles.
