Originating in the Pacific, competitive outrigger canoe racing is growing in popularity globally. Races range from 1000 m sprints to the world championship Molokai Hoe, a 42 mile race from Molokai Island to Oahu Island in Hawaii. Other races in Tahiti are much longer and span several days.
Coaches are always struggling to get data for crew selection. A popular method from rowing is to do seat trials where you have two boats and switch a single person from each a couple times. Data from Garmin watches are used to cut an exactly equal distance from each boat and the times are compared. This is very labor intensive and slow because only one person is getting tested at a time and usually 2 or 3 replicate races are done for each paddler.
Is anyone aware of a better methodology - better setup, better technology, better anything?
