I think it is interesting that 30 people viewed this page, yet nobody responded.  That is odd, given that the page I refer my viewers to has heaps of information that would be of great interest to those viewers, especially if they teach.

Our department recently developed a Facebook page.  It serves multiple purposes, but one of the aims is to highlight research being done in the department--particularly by students.  Currently, most of those viewing the page are current and former students, but also their family and friends, so I think, slowly, it is helping to at least get the word out about research interests, if not actual data yet.  

I know of other colleagues that use Twitter.  Because of the format, it can lead to very rapid dissemination of ideas through various networks.  I know that I have found out about new research via my feed.

One issue with social media, in my opinion, is that there is so much information being shared, that sometimes it can be overwhelming.  I know that sometimes, I avoid looking at my Twitter feed because it is such a deluge of information.

Thanks for sharing this information, Rebecca.  You're the only person who ever responded to the question I raised here.  However, I can share that I have built up a "fan club" over over 1300 people in less than a couple of month, with some of them doing lots more than looking at photos, sending very positive feedback.  It was a good investment of my time.

Dear Hans, I think Facebook or even youtube video sharing is very effective for younger scientist like me. I guess this is because we spent more time in front of our computer rather than attending some scientific talk. Hope it helps! :)

On facebook you can also ask people that had already liked your page to send invitations to their friends to like it. I already asked my friends outside the lab, and I think that 10 or 20 of them liked it. If every one do it, I think it might help you.

Indeed, Patricia, lots of people I invited do exactly that.  This way we grew to well over 5,000 supporters last month.  Since we used our page to secure Unesco Inscription, this community support is important for us.
