What is the best tool(s) to simulate a computer based system with hardware errors?

I would like to know models and tools for injecting transient hardware errors to a x86-64 architecture with a Linux distribution as operating system. I would like to know about firmware that injects errors in the memories, cores and buses. So, please, is there a tool or set of tools that allow you to control the Mean Time Between Failures MTBF of a system? Which is according to you the best option and why?
