you could try to use a solution containing 100 ml ethanol, 2.5 g picric acid, 25 ml acetic acid and 25 ml water as suggested in the following paper:

From the first results obtained, you can modify the intensity of the attack by varying the times and / or diluting the solution.

Dear Dr. Pierluigi Traverso ,

I have tried acetic picral but with a higher concentration of picric acid and have found that it over-etches pure magnesium. It did work well with other Mg alloys I worked with probably due to the presence of secondary phases at the grain boundaries. Since this is pure Mg so it is a little but tricky to work with. But thank you for your answer.
