I am supposed to perform an experiment in which I need to purge definite amount of Carbon dioxide (CO2) into my solution during certain time intervals. I would like to know the best source of CO2 for the controlled addition.
(I referred literature, but none of them mentioned the method to do it.)
Hi Vikram, I don't know the specifics of your system, but bicarbonate seems like a good choice since you know its solubility, its effects on pH and salinity and the solubility of CO2 in aqueous solutions at a given temperature.

Can you buy either compressed CO2 in cylinders or dry ice? If you generate CO2 from carbonates or bicarbonates using acid you will need to scrub the gas to make sure that you do not entrain droplets of the acid.

I think with the help of CO2 cylinder fitted with Mass flow controller, I should be able to control each mL addition of CO2 gas.
CO2 can be stored as gas, liquid or solid, and delivery depends on the application. CO2 gas delivered from a cylinder is a good solution, just remember to include over pressure protection downstream if any component is not rated to the full cylinder pressure. And be certain all components in pure CO2 service are compatible with CO2. Something to consider is that CO2, depending on the method of generation and storage, can also contain substantial amounts of non-CO2 species (impurities). If your experiment is sensitive to moisture, CO, COS, NH3, N2 or other compounds in PPM concentrations, you can control this by the quality of CO2 you purchase, and possibly add post purification if needed.
