For Fabaceae, the "International Legume Database & Information Service" (ILDIS, http://ildis.org/cgi-bin/Araneus.pl?version~10.01&LegumeWeb&tno~3170&genus~Pongamia&species~pinnata ) would be the best place to look.

IPNI only gives information, if a name is existing, but not, if it is the correct name to be used.

I think Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre is the name used until the species was moved to Millettia, as Millettia pinnata (L.) Panigrahi.  Within Millettia, it was treated under section Fragiliflorae by Adema (2000).

Hu et al. (2002) have shown Millettia to be polyphyletic; as far as I know there is no consensus so far about how to treat resolved clades in Millettieae.  I think you could either combination until there has been a revision.

The plant species in question has been given various scientific names over the years according to changing classification norms. M. pinnata is the most recent change and hence will be more relevant. For example, we find many articles on tomato with the name Lycopersicon esculentum while the current name is Solanum lycopersicum.

The latest name of Pongamia pinnata ( L.) Pierre  is Millettia pinnata (L.) Panigrahi. The accepted name is Pongamia pinnata. Please check the following links.

Regarding Pongamia pinnata, the correct name to be used currently is:

Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre

(Millettia pinnata (L.) Panigrahi and Derris indica (Lam.) Benn. are synonyms.

Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre is correct and Millettia pinnata (L.) Panigrahi is synonym of it. 

• The name Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre is based on basionym Cytisus pinnatus L.
• Several new combinations were made for this basionym Cytisus pinnatus L. such as Cajum pinnatum (L.) Kuntze; Galedupa pinnata (L.) Taub.; Millettia pinnata (L.) Panigrahi; Pongamia pinnata (L.) Merr.; Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre. 
• Presently this species is placed under the genus Pongamia hence combination in genus Pongamia is accepted. But it is interesting to note here that combination proposed by E.D. Merrill  is invalid (being an isonym) and the combination Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre  is accepted.

If Millettia pinnata is synonym of Pongamia pinnata then what would be the synonym of Millettia pinnata? Surely Pongamia pinnata. In fact Millettia pinnata is the recent name of Pongamia pinnata ( owing to the movement of Pongamia pinnata to genus Millettia). Hence the use of name Millettia pinnata is more appropriate than Pongamia pinnata. Please check the following link.

 Millettia pinnata is more appropriate. I have worked on this tree species. In my earlier publications I have used the name Pongamia pinnata but in my recent publications I have using the name Millettia pinnata. Please check the attachments.

You can use the scientific name Millettia pinnata according to the new taxonomical revision. But old name is more wide-spreaded in scientific sources.

So, I consider that the name Pongamia pinnata is more preferable.

Basically, if you're asking a botanist or a plant taxonomist for an answer, we would recommend you to check using The Plant List (www.theplantlist.org) for the current accepted name. Just key in your plant name, hence you'll see Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre with the name stating it's an accepted name. Worry not as the synonyms are also listed when you click on the accepted name to enable you to crosscheck other publications made by other authors regarding the species you're working on elsewhere.
