Number of research publications is rapidly increasing with unfortunately degraded quality and use which is not a good trend. After some time, it would be difficult to locate interesting papers in the bulk of scientific literature. This trend or situation should be fixed to keep the scientific literature tidy.
Number of publications per se of a researcher doesn't mean his creative work, but some of institutions unfortunately look at the number of publications of the researcher in promotions !!. The significance of publication is in the creation of good method or result to solve a particular problem or to create a new branch of science. Cheers.
As you allude to, Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Rana , this is now often misused by people to make themselves look better with their peers and employers. Thus, the significance is diminishing, unfortunately.
