There are doctorates which emphasize innovation in practice rather than innovation in theory, such as DBA, MD, LLD, DProf (and probably others). For a career in industry those kinds of doctorates may be more suitable.
But if a candidate already has a PhD which innovates in theory, that can still be relevant to industries where research is required such as IT and pharmaceuticals.
A PhD candidate may further increase their attraction to industry through gaining practitioner experience and/or publishing in a practitioner journal, such as those of relevant professional institutes. Self-employment as a consultant in your chosen field may also be possible, while applying for more permanent roles.
