Dear Adlim,

when adding elemental sulfur (solid powder) to a Na2S solution, the sulfur dissolves partially forming various polysulfides: Na2S5, Na2S4, Na2S3, and Na2S2. Such a solution should have an orange/red color.

For this reaction, acetone is not necessary. Could your green color originate from acetone impurity?

What means  sulfur-acetone? S0 is not soluble in (CH3)2C=O.

Your requested reaction might be some kind of variant of the  Willgerodt-Kindler synthesis. Check the details of the attached synthetic routs.

Thanks a lot Dr. Péter Szabó; What I observed is when elemental sulfur was added in acetone it gave (colorless solution), some undissolved sulfur was filtered. The filtrate was added water it gave white colloid. This was added Na2S solution it gave green and clear solution, the was no ammonium anion unless it could be the impurity from NasS. If so, is it  the formation CH3CONH2 according to Willgerodt-Kindler Reaction? but CH3CONH2 (not green, is it?)

Can we prepare these polysulfides in open atmospheric condition? If not then what are the conditions?

Abhishek Mishra yes this works well under standard atmosphere. Go to the lab and try it out. You should boil the mixture, at room temperature, the reaction is very very slow.

G. Brauer. Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry,

Volume 1, second edition, Academic Press, (1963), page 347

There it reads for a large-scale procedure:

"A two-liter, round-bottom, long-neck flask is placed on a steam bath and filled with 500g of Na2S * 9 H2O, which is then heated with 250g of powdered Sulfur for 3 hours. Frequent shaking is necessary. The sulfide melts in its water of crystallization and dissolves most of the sulfur, with the color of the mixture becoming deeper. The cooled dark red-brown solution is diluted with 400ml of water. It is then rapidly suction-filtered to remove S residue......"

The procedure claims a polysulfide of the approximate composition Na2S5.5

Disodium sulfide can undergo partial hydrolysis: Na2S + H2O ⇌ NaOH + NaHS; NaHS + H2O ⇌ NaOH + H2S. Na2S can combine with elemental S to generate sodium disulfide (Na2S2). Isophorone, a cyclic ketone, may perhaps result by NaOH promoted aldol condensation of acetone. The observed green colour seemingly could result from solvate interaction between Na2S2 and the mentioned cyclic ketone.
