Trans Himalayan regions of India represent very fragile ecosystems in true sense . These cold desert ecosystems are not like that of perturbation dependent ecosystems of hot desert .Little bit biotic disturbances can alter functioning of ecosystems in the region as there is very small scope to counter abiotic disturbances. My long experience clearly indicated that functioning of ecosystems in the region is going towards negative way with ever increasing biotic disturbances in form of rapid urbanisation , excessive tourism and a race for higher crop production at any environmental cost . I want a constructive debate on the issue from learned members of RG.
One has to balance the two situations; of course giving more importance to conservation measures.
Any strategy intended to be implemented in any region, especially the region of Himalayan that doubles as a haven for rare and endemic biodiversity species and a hotspot for remarkable collection of biological diversities, it will be wrong to intensify crop production and waterwash conservation!
Any agricultural or biodiversity strategy that compromises on conservation to a larger degree is devoid of love for the environment, is criminal to sustainable development and is a wicked snatcher of all viable resources that is to be handed to the future progeny. Best regards

So far I know that particular area is not having good fertility to get good harvest of food grains. Cultivation of eco friendly plants for suitable production may assist conservation of natural resources. So, second point is more important than the other.

Major problem in the region that every body is now thinking on intensification of agriculture which is perhaps not good . Priority should be on natural resource conservation as already glaciers are shrinking year by year , there are lot of soil ( that is man made after tremendous work of rural folk since ages )and water erosion and above all ever increasing biotic disturbances. In such situation , policy should be production (what ever available from age old Agricultural practices , which are really organic ) + more emphasis on natural resource conservation = Sustainability. Thank you very much Prof .Kenneth for touching the issue . At Laddakh , India arable crop production was sufficient for the population of the region some four decades ago . Population increase is still no issue as population growth is much lower than other regions of India . There organic agriculture was much advanced . But mix up using modern agricultural practices are not solving the issues of demand and supply , rather agricultural production , especially that of arable crops is dwindling . Natural resources are depliting in the region and that is my concern . Regards , JCT
Though there is a population increase but still population in Leh is not very high and alarming. In Leh, organic farming is very popular. I think presently it is better to go far a combination of both i.e. limited crop production along with natural resource conservation. But in coming future, we may need to look into it a fresh when population pressure may increase at a rapid pace which is likely to be since tourism pressure is extremely high in the region due to much inflow of Indian and foreign tourists. Now, eco-tourism has become a big business in Leh.
