Concrete with a low cement content. Main function of the lean concrete is to provide the uniform surface to the foundation concrete and to prevent the direct contact of foundation concrete from the soil. Lean Concrete is used under the foundations.

There is no doubt that the aggregate/cement, is a secondary factor in the strength of concrete but it has been found that for a constant w/c, a leaner mix ( poor mix) lead to a higher strength...

This behavior are not clear.

In certain cases, a higher aggregate content would lead lower shrinkage and lower bleeding.

Sometimes, part of mixing water may be absorbed by the aggregate, a large amount of aggregate absorbs a greater quantities of water. But the basic state of aggregate was saturated surface dry.

What is lean concrete?

Lean concrete has a lower level of cement in it, which is why it’s mostly used for fillings or under the foundations, to keep it protected from the soil. It keeps the main foundation and chemicals like sulphates.

Besides the protection, lean concrete is used to lay down a firm spot for the foundation, instead of laying it directly on the soil.

For the rest of the structure, where you don’t , you should use rich concrete, which has a higher cement concentration. If you want to have a strong and more reliable foundation, then use both types of concrete in the production.

Lean concrete is called if the cement content used in concrete is less than about 10% of the total contents.

Here total content means -

“Aggregate + sand + any fillers + cement”

• P.C.C.(1:4:8) and P.C.C.(1:6:12) are the examples of lean concrete.
• In PCC (1:4:8) cement content is almost 7% while it is 5% in P.C.C.(1:6:12)
• The applications of this concrete is very limited because the strength og this is ver low.
