What is iconography and how can you apply the iconographic method to analyze art?

I would like to learn more about iconography and the methods used in iconographic analysis.

I recommend looking into the work of Linda Schele and the deciphering of maya hieroglyphics in the 1980s. It is called Structural Analysis or Iconographic Structural Analysis. This is what I followed in my rock art research. I wish more people knew about this. It is a formal analysis that takes a lot of effort but really works.
