You are right. The diesel consumption is different for regions, slope of land, size of farm and type of soil. In our experience, no-till system in large farm (1300 ha), the grower spent 22-24 liter /ha to produce soybean and 20-22 liter/ha (corn).

For Germany I have consumption values  for soil-tillage:  system with plowing 70-80 l / ha, no-till system 50-70 l / ha and direct seeding 30-40 l / ha. The data are universally valid and not specifically for corn or soybeans. But there is a clear difference in the diesel consumption between Germany and Brazil.

Mauro, what are the average yield of corn and soybean at your region?

You can consider soybean yield around 3,1 t/ha. Our corn is second crop, so the yield is lower than first corn crop, like USA. In Mato Grosso, you can assume 6 t/ha.

The average winter wheat yield is in Germany round about 8 t/ha. Soybean and grain maize are not the main crops. Over 50% is planted with grain.

In Gasso et al 2014 we report 79 l/ha for producing 7 t/ha of wheat in Northern Europe. This includes distributing animal manure. Fuel use can be reduced (by 23%) and yield increase by introducing Controlled Traffic Farming.

The average consumption of diesel in a farm with no-till in the pampean region of Argentina is 22.9 l / ha to produce wheat, soybeans and maize. The consumption of disel in wheat is 20 l / ha, in early soybean 23.8 l / ha, second soybean 22 l / ha, early corn 21.5 l / ha and late corn 22 l / ha. The consumption of disel by quantity of grain produced is: 6.4, 6.7, 5.8, 2.5, and 2.6 l / t for wheat, second soybean, early soybean, early corn and late corn. By tillage, disel consumption is 8, 3.2, and 10.6 l / ha for sowing, spraying and harvesting. These tills are made with modern machinery.

The biggest proportion of energy in grain crops is not for tillage which is a common misconception but rather for Nitrogen application. For energy efficiency in grain farming the rotation of legume with the grain crop has dramatic effect. In the legume crop no Nitrogen is needed greatly reducing the carbon foot print. The yield of maize after soybean is increased about 20% and soybean after maize is also similarly stimulated. If we add into the rotation a winter wheat crop which is interseeded to mixed hay the soil improvement is very substantial can eliminate the need to apply Nitrogen for the maize crop. The big kicker is when the mixed systems are used and manures are composte recycled not only is the carbon footprint dramatically lowered but also the improvement of land through carbon and nitrogen sequestration to the soil gives the added benefits of great reduction in carbon emission footprint but also greatly increase carbon and nitrogen sequestration. These system approaches work energetically, environmentally and economically they are not only sustainable but regenerative.
