Cloud migration is the process of moving applications and data from one location, often a company's private, on-site ("on-premises") servers to a public cloud provider's servers, but also between different clouds. A cloud migration strategy is the high-level plan an organization adopts to move existing on-premises and/or co-located application workloads and their associated data into the cloud. There are seven cloud migration strategies: rehosting, redeployment, repackaging, refactoring, repurchasing, retiring, and retaining. These were originally called the “5 Rs” by Gartner, and later expanded to “7 Rs”. The 7 cloud migration strategies are: rehost, relocate, replatform, refactor, repurchase, retire, and retain.
