I am looking for a well-known method to conduct an usibility assesment of Data portals (how easy one can find what he/she is looking for?). The domin focus will be geodata and statistical data services. Thanks in before hand.

Usability testing is oriented not to the type of system, but to methodology.
So, you can have two types of usability evaluation: empirical or analytic.
In empiric evaluation, you use users; on analytic, you use techniques for experts.
Summing up: to determine what users want, I recommend to carry out task analysis (answer eleven questions);
To determine if an interface is usable, I recommend the ten heuristics from Nielsen.
