are you asking about capping tendency? it may be due to over drying of granules or due to increased amount of magnesium stearate
the probable cause may be the presence of waxy material in formulation will get melt due to temperature generation on turret of tablet press during compression. it cause sticking of material on turret & upper punch which leads to flakes or capping issue.
are you asking abour flakes or crowning at edges of tablet during compression. if your concern is crowning reduce compression force.
I am with the opinion of low melting point ingredients that may be within your formulation so check via DSC or even simple melting point determination by tube , another probability is that some additives yields eutectic system reducing the melting point of one of the components, the last option to check is the proper amount and mixing time of the used lubricant
probable causes are:
1) Over drying of granules.
2) High concentration of Mg Sterate or steric acid.
3) Elevated compression force or high speed of the M/c or feed frame is not adjusted to turret level with paper thickness gap.
Sounds like a capping problem. This can occur when compressing particles which are plate like in shape. Can also be caused by too high compression forces.
If permitted you could reduce particle size of the drug, or increase amount of binder.
