We work with children ages 4-8 years of age, and we want to get decent gaze direction during a table top task with manipulatives. Head-mounted cameras (GoPro, LookSee) are insufficient. We have some great suggestions from the literature, but I am curious what the community has to say.
Wow! Sounds interesting. That's the first time I have ever heard that we can use these fancy gears to obtain children's gaze directions. However, why don't you just use Tobiii to gather eye movement data? Maybe Tobii is a much better choice. ^_^
With respect to the Tobii, we have experience with the computer-based Tobii in kids, but that won't work in this case because they are not looking at a screen. We are considering the glasses, but we wanted to canvas the community to see whether others have experience using them with children in this age range for this kind of small scale area. We're toying with a range of options to try to make it as simple as possible for the children while still getting the data we need. Tobii is definitely a candidate, but we are checking out other options as well.
So that's how matters stand. Anyway, thanks for broadening my horizon. lol
Dear Amy, interesting problem. We have experience with SR Research and PupilLabs. Both are great, but head mounted, or head fixed eye trackers. From what I know by friends SMI (now Apple) and Tobii are comparable. But if you can not use a head mounted eye tracker and also have to cope with large head movements, it is difficult.
We have good experience with the SR system in 7-9-year-old pupils (http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fpsyg.2010.00207/full) and today I'd certainly give the Pupils systems a try. Four years is pushing it but might be possible.
