Necessity is the mother of all inventions, so the saying goes. But, are most innovations born of pure necessity? True, overreaction to setbacks drives innovation. However, once in a while new widgets appear out of the blue, without warning, with little or no need for them until one sees one, and then we asks ourselves how could we have lived without them? Are there internal urges, as yet unrevealed, for which the likes of Steve Jobs, Buckminster Fuller or Gerald Genta have a knack for? What drives innovation?
