The future of Cloud computing is that "we are yet to see high and cheap energy efficient systems". What does this mean to a mere cloud user or customer given that currently a few cloud providers' SLAs are never clear? Does it in the long run mean, standardization of even SLAs or Cloud provision standards ?
First of all, what is a "mere Cloud consumer"? Every consumer is important, be it the end user or the developer.
If you inquire what cheap energy efficient systems mean for developers, the answer is not much. Developers are not concerned with how much the system they are deploying their solution to is using up energy. They are concerned with a different efficiency - computational efficiency.
Service providers, who put their services on the Cloud and who generally do not understand technical things about the solution they buy from developers care only that the cloud is cheep.
End users who only want to use the service can be grouped into two categories:
1. Those who want a cheep service provided regardless of the energy efficiency, ecological implication of running he Cloud that hosts the service etc.
2. Those who would like to hve a cheep service, but who care about questions of ecological impact, energy efficiency, the "greenness" of the Cloud host's data centre etc.
So there are no mere consumers. The whole chain is very complex and complicated and how different players see the Cloud differs from their position in the chain.
Providers want it cheep.
Developers want it stable and fast.
End users are the bunch both providers and developers have to put up with and to whom they have to devote their patience in order to earn trust, hence in order to get money from.
In the end, it is not energy efficiency that matters at all...
In my humble opinion, service-oriented cloud computing will enable free-market forces in accordance with the Austrian school of thought of economics. Thus, the clouds are in a way old wine in new bottles when it comes to technology and concepts. The revolutionary point is how feasible it makes service-oriented cloud computingto the point where it will affect all aspects of society, e.g., business, education, finance, government, agriculture, healthcare, telecom, etc. Thus, I believe that clouds in combination with bitcoins will lead us into a new reality of anarcho-capitalism: https://mises.org/daily/3791
