The label "recent + fossil" refers to species that have been reported both living (or at least are considered to belong to the recent fauna) and from fossil strata (i.e. >10,000 years). In fact there are quite many species in this category, e.g. a lot of species found in Pleistocene strata are still living today.

Most modern species did not appear yesterday, but very few of them are known in fossil condition. I understand by the term "recent + fossil" precisely those modern species for which fossil finds are known.

Just to clarify about the "fossil" concept.... even thou it is still an open debate, I wouldn't limit the concept to remains older than 10 kyBP.... that would mean that any remain found in Holocene deposits is not a fossil... and I profoundly disagree with that perception.

And I would check the references... because sometimes you could disagree with the criteria used to identify some fossil remains as extanct taxa.... it happens.... A LOT!
