My colleague (a dear co-author of mine) has made a really big paper (40 pages), I suggested to him to split it into two parts, Part 1 and Part 2 (something I see commonly in my field). He thinks now not to submit them both to the same journal, rather Part 1 to be submitted to a journal and Part 2 to a different one, is that OK?
No, send them both to the same journal, otherwise you are being a nuisance to those potential readers who only subscribe to one journal and not the other. A single editor may be able to suggest how to trim your papers to size.
This would depend on the conventions of your discipline, but If the paper is making a single argument, I'd say that splitting it in two would reduce its impact. In such a case, perhaps the argument needs to be tightened so that it will fit in what is the standard article length in your field. Your friend will also need to read up on what is considered a "redundant publication" - publishing a paper that covers similar ground as something already written may be considered academic malpractice, and it's certainly poor use of editorial resources.
Thank you for your replies. It seems now that the matter is like to be more editorial. Upon submission, it might be accepted in its actual size, lessened size, or in two parts.
