Dear respected colleagues, it OK and appropriate for some researchers who had never design a building nor supervise a building construction to be chief editors of some high impact journals?
In what way do these high end scientists help architecture in general and the local responses in particular?
Unfortunately, dear Khuplianlam, we do not see a force event on the horizon that could change the process of commercialization of science. However, if this process does not change, we all intellectuals will turn into wandering dervishes with a phone, thanks to which, we can press a button to solve the desired problem to activate the our robots. They will build houses, cook food or clean indoor air. Perhaps the price for this will be a lentil soup. However, aren't we making such a future today?
It doesn't matter the title but the respect from the students you inspire.
The chief editor is not only scientific, but also administrative activity. Therefore, a scientist, not being a specialist in a certain field, but being a good administrator, may well be the chief editor of the journal.
Leadership roles (such as editorial and management roles in general) may be characterized as being filled by people that do not necessarily have the knowledge, but ideally by people that know the people who knows the technical subject and gets them to execute in an efficient manner that provides successful outcomes.
Perhaps it also highlights the lack of scientific development in the architecture industry; it can also be due to the fact that architects can’t afford to indulge in such research ventures since most are private independent firms. The client may not pay for it.

In our institute two heads of departments don't have post graduate qualifications in the speciality headed by them

Generally speaking, journal positions filled by the chief editors should be occupied by those whose qualifications are in line with the scope and topic of the targeted journals.
I am not architecture but I learned hourse's thormal computer simulation and I know how to control hourse

Day lighting is also very nice, in day time almost not using light just day light. I can research this area technic to advice architecture how to build hourses to save energy and living comfortable.

I guess smartness in general things is also important. Sometimes specialize fields are indeed run by purely managerial skills without the needed expertise of relevant fields. For journals, however, I think the closure the field of study and the candidates expertise, the better it is.
In term of their expertise, you may ask them to do supporting document, research or knowledge in term of their keen. i trusted each of member in team can help more or less. Good Luck on your interest.
If the journal is about construction, then experience in construction is needed. If the journal is about theory or philosophy of architecture, then experience in these fields should be required. As simple as that. But you're right. Sometime people with irrelevant background take the lead.

Remember that many famous scientists published one or few manuscripts. Some sages did not know how to read.
The good and handsome architecture made not only the architects. It was kings, diplomats, mathematicians, artists.
Мany of them have gone poor, but always it was happy, strong and clever personality.

It reminds me of a long respected motto that goes like this: " Jack of all trades and the master of none".

It was written 2020-2040 years ago.
We simply mean an architect as a person who plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings and has licensed to do so in a country.
I think it is normal for professors to head things they are not specialized in. However, that necessitates extensive reading on their side though I donot see a problem as they could have solicited funds for the same and are equally in the learning process as no one knows everything
