A number of free theses publishers can be found in the publishing industry. E.g. GRIN, Lambert etc. What do you think of the acceptability of these products as publications in terms promotions/appointments of academic staff in universities.
I have never heard them being mentioned; I doubt that they are considered to be serious academic publishers. In contrast a book series found at a main scientific publisher has a team of scholars that scrutinize each manuscript for content and suitability. I think you would get much better guidance from the latter.
While I understand where Michael and others may be coming from, I think there is merit to work published under these publishers. These publishers provide a bonafide venue for individuals who are trying to present novel ideas to the public through a less selective publisher. People should look at the actual work before judging if they hold merit or not. Many works under well known publishers lack in ingenuity or insight. Those that use these publishers, I encourage them.
