With increasing pressure to publish there seems to be an increasing culture of "if you put my name on your paper, I'll put yours on mine", regardless of whether the individual actually contributed. Author lists are sometime ludicrously long. Is this a sensible way to increase your publication number and improve colleague relationships? Or are we in danger of cheapening what it means to be co-author? If you think it's a problem, is there anything we can do about it?
