Single Atom catalysts are being reported by various teams, ex: Botao Qiao’s work on single platinum atoms on FeOx which was published on Nature chemistry (DOI: 10.1038/NCHEM.1095). Generally, single atom catalysts has exceptional properties such as drastic cost-reduction, notable catalytic activity, and selectivity. This is a developing area of catalysts industry which still have challenges of sample preparation, characterization, evaluation, and also mechanistic interpretation. I would like to have your opinions and even experiences if you have relevant to synthesis, characterization and application of single atom catalysts.

Electronic state of single metal atom adsorbed on oxide support dramatically differs frrom that of supported cluster, even if it is small enough (several atoms), thus providing new catalytic chemistry. At the same time, there are many problems relating to atom stabilization, specific atom/support interaction, reproducibility, etc.
Thank you Magkoev for the contribution. Highly appreciate your idea. The atom stabilization issue will come when it is about mounting single atoms on the surfaces such as silica or graphene. I strongly believe the atom stabilization issue will not be much strong when we support single atoms on metalic oxides or metal nanoparticle. As example Pt on Fe2O3 or Pt on Fe/Ni/Cu nanoparticle.
