Good question Dr Ali. This is a question on 'Conflict within '
Every one of us face at times in life such situation. A good human being wishes to remain consistent in behavior through out the life but many times there is inner conflict. Festinger's (1957) cognitive dissonance theory suggests that we have an inner drive to hold all our attitudes and beliefs in harmony and avoid disharmony (or dissonance). This is known as the principle of cognitive consistency.
Consistency in the mind's of human on some matter is lost and the human may feel discomfort. The feelings of discomfort due to internal inconsistency in beliefs and perceptions is termed as Cognitive dissonance. Disharmony in the human behavior or values or beliefs or ideas or perceptions cause psychological stress .This is undesirable tension making human uneasy because he is holding two simultaneous conflicting thoughts.
The agony and mental pressure is greater the more the dissonance is.
To eliminate discrepancy such type of dissonance a human needs to e overcome at the earliest by taking mental decision
Festinger has said that how fast the human being resolve such inconsistency depends on mental health of the human. Such stress is likely to continue if the conflicts are deep rooted and easy solution is not available.
In psychology, cognitive dissonance is known as mental discomfort may be caused by psychological stress. Usually, it experienced by a person who simultaneously holds two or more contradictory beliefs/ ideas. The occurrence of cognitive dissonance is a consequence of a person performing an action that contradicts personal beliefs. It happens when confronted with new information that contradicts previously said beliefs and ideals. Thus it is a state of the transitional phase, the individual is not deciding how to do, keeping old practice or following new codes.

The term cognitive dissonance refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or assumptions. This produces a feeling of discomfort leading to an alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviours to reduce the discomfort and restore balance. The tension that the conflict arouses in people is relieved by one different "defensive maneuvers": they reject or avoid the new information; persuade themselves that no conflict really exists; reconcile the differences, etc. The concept was developed in the 1950s by the American psychologist Leon Festinger.

Perhaps an example, if one believes that telling a lie is wrong, but when confronted by a situation where if telling lie would save a life, the internal psychological stress during telling of the actual lie, a stressful event, may be described as cognitive dissonance.
I think this is a relative concept. What seems to us a dissonance at today's level of knowledge, tomorrow will manifest itself as a moving dialectical contradiction.
National geography has some documentation video about cognitive those are too much interesting and informative about practical cognitive science. you can get from there website.
