In quantum gravity, the set of attempts to find a physical theory which explains quantum gravity by reconciling general relativity and quantum field theory, we find many research programs stating that spacetime is not fundamentally real, proposing instead a different ontology. This different ontology is different from the more classical space in many respects, and the details of this deviation depend on the particular program that is considered. The challenge is then to try to recover relativistic spacetime from the more fundamental ontology described by each of these research programs.
