The relationship between leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity (and maximum stomatal conductance) seems very well-established. The studies I've read generally say 'it is due to nitrogen's key role in photosynthetic proteins (Rubisco)' but don't go into more detail. In a similar vein, what determines leaf nitrogen? Any conceptual explanation(s) would be appreciated though I don't have a strong background in biochemistry.
