How fresh was your waste? I am not a microbiologist, but really looks like microbes has colonized your material. Just few hours in warm room is enough to get some wild microbes appear. And if it is food waste than moisture and food probably was enough for them to grow quickly.

Food waste was hydrothermally carbonized at pressurized reactor . What you see in the SEM images is not a food waste sample but is its carbonized char sample.
