- There is a fast-paced land-use change (urbanization) in one of the sub-watersheds (dominantly agricultural watershed) of the upper Blue Nile basin.
- There is both residential and industrial expansion that may have an impact on the riverine regime of the catchment including water quality.
- There is also currently an effort being made by the local sector to regulate the water flow (mainly the flood during the main rainy season) for irrigation purposes to enhance the agricultural productivity in that area.
- Hence, it calls to research the WFE nexus to come up with a better synergy between the health of the ecosystem and development.

First and foremost, you have to have reliable data, not only hydrological but also on all the aspects relating to the various activities on the whole basin
Presence of adequate and quality data such as water quality, river flow, ecological, land use/cover, socio-economic, etc. in such catchments is indispensable to come up with better research outputs. Some of the required data need to be long-term (such as river flow and water quality, land use) and others could be collected using appropriate tools such as collecting samples and using questionnaires.
