As a quality control engineer working for in a glass manufacturing company. What characterization technique you would use for routine and quick analysis to decide whether any impurities from the glass melting furnaces are introduced to your glass products? Please explain your reasoning.
Using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) allows to detect the main and the minor parts of glass and the trace elements. During this analysis a laser beam is focused on the glass surface to generate fine particles (laser ablation). The ablated particles are transported to the secondary excitation source of LA-ICP-MS. The excited ions in the plasma source are introduced to a mass spectrometer detector for elemental analysis. LA-ICP-MS is a powerful analytical technology that enables highly sensitive elemental analysis to be performed directly on glass samples. This technique is used for fast analysis of glass.
I would suggest XRF and ICP, both are multielement, simultaeous and fast methods for almost all elements (XRF for medium-light to heavy).
