The series of books about nanomaterial characterisation edited by prof, Wang Zhonglin, eg. 'Handbook of Nanophase and Nanostructured Materials', 'Characterization of nanophase materials ', I think, would be suitable for you.

There is tremendous growth in nano-materials science and engineering in last 20 years. Hence, numerous books are available on characterization of the nano-materials.

The principle techniques for their characterization include

1.XRD

2. SEM

3.TEM

4.FTIR

5.UV

6.DLS

7. Raman

8. AFM

9. Floroscence .....

There are specialized books dealing with  particular characterization. The complete book covering all the topics may not fulfill your desire to understand and analyse the samples.

Let us recall that nanomaterials, according to IUPAC definitions, are the objects of nanodimensions, and nanochemistry is the branch of colloid chemistry. Given this circumstances, the first and foremost question in any nanostudy is a proof of nanodimensionality and an analysis of the morphology of nanoparticles.

If so, XRD (determining the crystallite size using Scherer's method and maybe + Rietveld analysis for advanced users) and SEM/TEM for determining the size and morphology of nanoparticles are obligatory and must be performed first. As to colloid roots of nanoscience, the studies of surface area and porosity are much helpful, giving a complementary information to XRD/SEM/TEM data, see, e.g., my paper by the link provided (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/229135691_Surface_area_and_pore_volume_of_a_system_of_particles_as_a_function_of_their_size_and_packing).

In solutions, like in colloid chemistry, light scttering methods may be useful. AFM gives interesting data, first of all, abour roughness of the surface.

This set of methods (XRD/SEM/TEM/porosimetry) may be considered as a basic one. Other methods (UV-VIS, IR, Raman, fluorescence, etc.) are problem-related and generally have nothing to do with particle characterization from the point of view of size and morphology.

Firstly, characterizing nanoparticles is a very vague term. The characterizations done for inorganic nanoparticles such as mesoporous silica (porosity, BET analysis) will not stand correct for polymeric nanoparticles and same will be for metal nanoparticles. So, the first thing you will have to decide is what type of nanoparticle are you supposed to characterize. 

The second thing is the surface functionaization of nanoparticle. The characterization parameters depends on type of surface functionalization (like it is done with peptide, polysaccharide, wntigen, polymers etc). The characterizations will also depend on what are you supposed to find. for ex. if you have conjugated peptide on nanoparticle then  you can characterize it for finding if conjugation has been done, efficiency of conjugation, to verify weather conjugation is monolayer or multilayer (in case of electrostatic conjugation), etc. Then you also need to evaluate if the conjugated peptide is still active or not. 

Third and most important characterization is related to toxicity of nanoparticles. For this you need to characterize theprotein corona on nanoparticles, its hydrophilic and hydrophobic interaction etc.

So, just going for characterization will help you collect lot of data but the correlation between them will be poor . If you want precise characterizations methods then you need to first select the class of nanoparticles you need to characterize.

Please check the refs below. You can also use your electronic database to search how the characterization is done in various sub-fields of Nanomaterials (Quantum dots, Nanotubes, Nanofibers, Plasmons, Nanocomposites...). Ideally the cahracterization depends on the application of the nanomaterials (Biology, sensors, Batteries, Photovoltaics...). Good luck!

Depending on the material, UV/VIS/IR spectroscopy is a good tool as well if you combine it with a high spatial resolution for excitation (SEM cathodoluminescence or micro-PL) and/or detection (SNOM). The tool of choice is defined by the spatial resolution you need for your analysis. These methods have their problems, but they are absolutely non-invasive which is a big advantage indeed.

Although some good answers were provided I would like to comment that it would help if the question would be asked in a more specific manner to provide reasonable answers. "nanomaterial" is a but unspecific to start with. If one has biomedical applications in mind, in particular cancer research, the National Cancer Institute Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory is a very important guide, as Dustin remarked.
