probably you’re getting the „java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space” message. I tried to resolve it by changing the Java memory setting (-Xms) even to 8GB (java -Xms8192m), but with no success. I’m not sure whether 8GB is still insufficient or maybe some Java library cannot handle SUMO ontology.

I’m not sure if it would solve your problem, but you can upload SUMO ontology to the WebProtégé: http://webprotege.stanford.edu/ or deploy your own server.

Maybe someone here will provide a solution to the Protégé Desktop.

For me it worked setting 1GB in run.bat

jre\bin\java.exe -Xmx1G -Dlog4j.configuration=file:log4j.xml -DentityExpansionLimit=100000000 -Dfile.encoding=utf-8 -Dorg.protege.plugin.dir=plugins -classpath bin/felix.jar;bin/ProtegeLauncher.jar org.protege.osgi.framework.Launcher

then it loaded successfully the ontology.

However in Win32 systems the JVM can not use more than 1.4GB as documented in this note by Oracle
