The quality of school education needs special attention for developing a better society where the human beings, other creatures and the eco system are safe for us and our future generations. To make this happen, school education is to be paid special attention. The most education systems across the globe primarily focus upon the academic competencies and ignore other crucial aspects. The proposed research question is to identify critical areas which are worthy to investigate.
A colleague shared these big picture educational questions with our Education Honours students a few years ago. They still strike me as mostly pertinent and relevant questiions to explore:
1.What curricular content/processes should be taught/learnt this century, how and why?
2.Which divisions of labourbetween teachers and students optimize learning?
3.How much teacher design of tasks, how much freedom for student inquiry?
4.Which mediating tools, how and when, for different learners, different tasks?
5.Which physical/virtual settings optimize quality learning for different students over time?
6.Which theoretical perspective(s) for which purposes, for which insights?
7.What enables and constrains teacher change in practical knowledge/adaptation?
8.What gains in understandings/practices come from cross-disciplinary insights?
9.What disciplinary/generic practices promote higher-order reasoning/problem-solving?
10.How to theorize/enact multi-modal learning?
11.How to theorize/enact creative problem-solving?
12.What is evidence of quality learning and why?
13.What enables/constrains students experiencing their learning as personalized?
14.What are the implications for future curricular and school design?
In my opinion, school education should consider deeply analyzing society and culture to describe and analyse their current state. Cultural richness can bring a solution to an important amount of social problems and its analysis can play a key role in policy making. Besides, critical thinking through the analysis of past and current events can prepare people to face social challenges in a better way and to avoid negative actions. In this last aspect, ethical and moral concerns should be an important part to grant a real and solid improvement.
