Is it possible for a gas molecule to act as a hopping site on the surface of semiconducting material?

Polaron hopping is a very subtle topic. From what I know is that the hopping distance lambda is determined by the lattice to overcome i.e. the potential barrier of a charge. Also known as tunneling through a finite wall having thickness lambda. Quantum mechanics may give you the answer.
