I observed a huge population of these organisms aggregating in the roots of maize plants while searching for mycorrhizal colonization. Can anyone suggest what these organisms are?
I see two or possibly 3 types of cell/organism in the image. I took the liberty of editing the original to mark cell types A,B,C. Which cells are you unsure of? I would agree that some appear to be storage cells as stated by Mr. Baumann. This would be the cell labeled A in my edited version. As to the other cells I am unsure and B and C could possibly be the same cell type just at different fields of depth. I would almost like to say it resembles a nematode but I dont see some details one might expect. A possible alternative would be an Oomycete of some form.
I am rather an expert of 'caffeine plants' than of maize. Nevertheless I refer you to the studies of Viktor B Ivanov dealing with the maize root. Here one link and the title of one of his articles:
Thank you all very much for your valuable suggestions. I tried in different literature and found similar structures inside the roots. They are mentioned to be DSE sclerotia (Dark Septate Endophytic sclerotia). These are Fungal organisms.
