Basically, blowhole is a kind of cavities defect, which is also divided into pinhole and subsurface blowhole. Gases entrapped by solidifying metal on the surface of the casting, which results in a rounded or oval blowhole as a cavity. Therefore, is there any available methods to prevent or reduce this defect?
Dear colleague,
you may solidify your sample unter low pressure/vacuum. This is a wellknown technique that helps to get rid of gas bubbles during casting procedure.
But I do not know whether this technique is applicale to your sample. Perhaps you have to change your experimental set up significantly.
But there is no need for a 'perfect' vaccum; reduced atmospheric pressure is sufficient.

First you have to determine what type of blowholes you have. Is the gas coming from the metal itself, entrapped during mold filling or produced by a reaction with atmosphere or with the mold? The solution depends on the liquid metal, the (melting, holding and pouring) process and also on the mold material being used.
