What are the reasons for Raman shift?

Could anyone explain to me the reasons for the Raman shift (increase or decrease in the wavnumber relative to the reference material) in Raman spectra ? and how i can explain the origin of a certain peak appears in the spectrum and i could not find it in the literature? is there any reference can help me in Raman spectra interpretation?
