In certain to show the results and findings completely regards to trustworthiness, credibility, dependability, transferability, and confirmability as criteria for qualitative research.
"Successful Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide for Beginners" by Braun and Clarke is a great book when starting to do qualitative stuff. They also cover issues around quality.
Thank you for such a wonderful topic of discussion.
In my life, whatever researches I have pursued, were mainly hybrid researches with perhaps a little bit of more weight given to qualitative aspects of the research.
In the chapter on literature review, I had to work hard to find related prior researches and literature in my domain or related domains. Then I had to work hard for their reviewing. This is of prime importance in a qualitative research. It is because it is the chapter which actually acts as the spinal cord of the research. It acts as so by giving rise to research topic, objectives and questions. The same thing happens in quantitative research also. But in qualitative research, the researcher has to read and analyze the papers more thoroughly to make it useful.
While collecting data through a structured questionnaire, designing of the questionnaire is very important. You need to collect qualitative data. In such researches, many a times collection of data means collection of opinions of the respondents. So sometimes you may be required to include some open ended questions so that the respondents can share their opinions with you.
During data analysis, more wight has to be given on the popular replies captured while interviewing the respondents.
To sum up, it can be said that maintenance of the quality of literature review, data captured and their analysis, are primarily the quality criterion that must be filled in qualitative research.
I had tried to write the reply from a researcher's viewpoint. My RG friend, Abu Bashar is now pursuing a research in a reputed university of India. So after going through the topic of discussion, I felt that this is a topic straight from his heart. So I tried to understand Abu's requirements and participate in this discussion accordingly.
I am very happy to see that you found my writing admirable. Your admiration of my writing is a source of motivation for me.
i ll try to answer your question from my experience and teaching. My knowledge ist mostly influenced by the german sociological landscape, discussions and discourses.
qualitative research unites some specific characteristics.
One of the main traits is the 'openess'. We focus on individual subjects and their own perspectives, social structures and knowledge to gain our data („If you can measure it, that ain‘t it.“(Kaplan 1964: 204)). And people are constructing their own life story which has influence on their actions, thoughts and perspecitves (Thomas Theorem: „If men define situations as real, they are real in their
consequences.“) Therefore we need a vague idea of the research we want to conduct, but we need to remember the dynamics in the field, that can lead us to change our methods for gaining data or scrutinize our field of interest. qualitative research describes itself often as an exploration of foreign or familiar setting. I think thats a good way to think of it like the old ethnologist researches. Also openess means to be open for the impressions in and of the field, we should be self-reflexive about our steps in the field and our premises. Also we need to adapt our research tools to our research object. You mostly would conduct 1 1/2 hours of interviews with smaller children an an example. Also maybe you ll recognize that you need to conduct participating observation instead of interviews. Thats another point in qualitative research: We have a lot of methods. feel free to think about using them if you think they are fitting and: be creative! I encourage my students in experimenting and trying new things using the methods, because thats either enriching for the research or for the own experience (here again the self reflexivity). Furthermore always hold in mind, that your data are bound to specific locations, social groups or features (contextuality). That leads also to other criteria. We should follow the research ethics and valuate data management. Our research objects are trusting us with their very own story. We are establishing relationships with persons of the field due our research tools which are bringing us in close contact. So remember central aspects of research ethics (anonymization, causing no harm etc.). Also take care of sensetive data, with whom are you sharing them? Where are you storing them? Are they secured?
Marudut Bernadtua Simanjuntak already metntioned the qualitiy criteria so ill do a short addo from whats Steinke (2004) recommends:
intersubjective comprehensibility
indication of the research process
empirical foundation
being realistic about limitations
coherence
relevance
Self reflexivity
Also some add: Triangulation of methods and questioning yourself.
A task force of the APA (American Psychological Association) developed reporting standards (quality criterias) for qualitative research, which seems to me open for all disciplines:
