Basement aquifer is an unconfined type in which the contained groundwater always in contact with the atmosphere, and hence the atmospheric CO2 gas easily dissolved in water to produce H2CO3 (Weak acid) dissociated into H+ and HCO3- ion that characterise the chemical type of groundwater in Basement terrains.

What about organic matter and vegetation in the upper aquifer? Its decomposition can also supply carbon compounds to groundwater.
