What are the possible mechanical properties that one can study with corrosion studies?
In the case of coating testing, adhesion, impact resistance, elasticity, scratch resistance can be tested first. On the other hand, in the case of metal samples, the strength properties are mainly tested for example: bending, twisting or impact resistance. However, in corrosion studies, the corrosion rate is mainly examined and samples are evaluated by metallographic methods
In case of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete, one can observe reduction in mass of steel, tensile stress in concrete, crack width in concrete, bond stress. Depending of type of structural member, one can study effect of corrosion on bending stress, compressive stress of member.
Stress-Corrosion Cracking is an important property related to corrosion. Your current project involves 7000-series aluminum alloys, which are known to be susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking in certain aging conditions. I would recommend ASTM G47 as an appropriate test method, which you may modify to test your chosen corrosive agents.
I would recommend running the baseline ASTM G47 as a control test in addition to the reagents you intend to test.
