Pragmatism is not the only paradigm that has been associated with mixed methods, but it is widely accepted in that field. However, pragmatism goes well-beyond "that the weaknesses of one methods can be overcome by the strengths of the other."

If you look up my publications here, you will find copies of papers on pragmatism from 2007 in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research and 2014 in Qualitative Inquiry.

David and Michael are correct. Pragmatism is an important paradigm framework. It also depends on methodology of choice. For instance, action research (particularly participatory action research) is mixed methods - but also umbrellas under critical social theory and emancipatory philosophical underpinnings.

The attached chapter may assist. I appreciate that it doesn't include pragmatism - but the next edition version will include it.

In addition to pragmatism, other philosophical perspectives include; critical realism, transformative-emancipation and dialectical pluralism. However, pragmatism seems to be the popular perspective underpinning mixed methods research studies.

Tahir, a lot depends on your reasons for using an action research approach. In particular, if your goals fit within a transformative-emancipation perspective, then some people (e.g., Donna Mertens) consider this to be a paradigm for mixed methods research.

Alternatively, if you have different goals for pursuing action research, then the other topics mentioned in this discussion will be appropriate.
