Anterior lumbar interbody fusion cages have been integrated into clinical practice for almost two decades now. Most of them are cylindrical in shape and fabricated from Ti alloys, while having in their majority some type of open porosity.
Is there any retrospective study available concerning optimum shape, dimensions and porosity characteristics (pore distribution, size etc.). If not, does anyone have clinical insight on the topic?
Hi, Alexander! I think this physical characteristics may not be the most important thing about this implants. In my opinion, clinical performance is what matters and unfortunatelly we have few clinical studies comparing implants using this point of view. There are some radiological/stereometric or cadaveric studies, but I'm anxious to see good prospective clinical studies with patient oriented outcomes to guide clinical decision about spine implants. I hope you find them in your literature search.
