The biggest problems with geothermal heat exchangers are: large and variable contact resistance, corrosion (metals), expense, cracking and leaking (plastics), etc. It also depends on what type you are considering. A geothermal power plant (I have tested and performed design calculations on several) and home or building HVAC systems are vastly different.
