Currently, I am an Ass. Prof. of Marketing. A few months ago I have started my career as a lecturer and researcher, therefore I am looking for some applicable advice from those who are in more advanced stages on what are the things that I have to focus on more and the other things I have to avoid in this crucial stage.
In a word, I am looking for some practical advice that can help me to start my career in the right way?
Locate and study the promotion and tenure rules at your university. This will help you identify the things you will need to do to achieve promotion.
Dana, understand the expectations about research and teaching. It may be that research is more heavily weighted than teaching (even though teaching is the recurrent and seemingly unavoidable activity). Toward this, consider that research and teaching are not necessarily 'balanced' with each other, but often, in 'conflict' in matters of time and investments.
With awareness, organization, and management, this is resolvable.

Concentrate on your research and getting articles (in your field) published, but do not neglect your teaching. Also, try to find a mentor in the dept. who can "clue" you in on what your particular dept. wants and values.
Try to diversify your teaching approaches with different courses. balancing between teaching and training. managerial positions are not priority in the first years. Good luck

Regional work should you like and you're ready to devote adequate / even more than enough / time to work on the surveyed cases.
Expectations for rapid career progression are unrealistic and harmful. Important are small steps in the right direction.
Good relations with colleagues are required. Teamwork is an inherent feature of modern science.
It is important to have a good chance to come across a capable and fair leader / and yet it does not depend on you, and just Destiny /
If the above markers are met, the activity is very useful quality.
