How can we determine the contact angle of a single fiber? Are other methods like gas chromatography suitable for surface energy determination?
Assuming that the single fiber is hydrophobic and more or less isotropic, the contact angle can be examined by a very tiny water drop and a microscope ... or, if the fiber is too thin, by bringing the fiber in contact with water instead of the reversed process, as depicted here: http://www.attension.com/applications/measurements/fiber-wetting
You can indeed find extremely accurate tensiometers (Krüss, Attension, ...) with which the interaction of single filaments with various liquids can be measured by pushing/pulling the filaments in/out of the considered liquids. Surface energy can be deduced from such experiments. I confirm that free applications notes can be found in the websites of these suppliers.

Force tensiometer Kruess K 100 is the ideal equipment for determination of static and dynamic contact angles (Wilhelmy-method). In case the filaments are so fine that the measurement of individual fibres is complicated you can use the Washburn-method which is based on measurement of fibre bundels placed into a tube. With this method only the advancing contact angle can be determined.
