I give a suggestion even though I am not formally trained on aquaculture.

It is known that fish from natural streams are healthy in contrast to farmed fish. Before I proceed, let us look at the health of the population in a crowded country like India and USA. Any day the health of an average US person is decidedly better than that of an average Indian. The reason: Per capita funds for health of a US person is many times more than that of an Indian.

From the analogy, a farm fish is not healthy because the farm tries to maximize the fish catch from the small pond and thus the crowded fish is unhealthy. To get healthy fish, identify norms like the cubic feet of water for one fish of a kind. Grow fish in indoor ponds satisfying the norms.

Why indoor? We can not control the outside weather. The removal of CO2 from the atmosphere is a global responsibility and the nations are bound to fail. However we can and do control the indoor climate. Start aquaculture with the aim to increase the quality of fish rather than quantity.

Why not research on the aspect of 'fish health Vs volume of water per fish?'

For South Asian Countries´ fisheries and aquaculture ventures, salinity intrusion and shifts in temperature regime are crux issues. Also CO2 sink in waters, especially coastal waters is important. the references may help you understanding the facts you arise.

The likely effects on the sector could be:

Aquaculture ponds will have to be deeper that it is now,so that it takes enough time for surface layers of water to heat up. Another method is to cover ponds with leaves of bigger plants & this would increase, detritus & thereby decrease DO2. If the embankments are not planted with soil holding plants,wafting of dry soil will make the ponds shallow over a period of time & this will have a direct effect on turbidity & fish yield. With more light penetration,some of the phytoplankton varieties will be marginalized & new ones would replace them,& if the culture fish varieties are not compatible, it could have effect on its yield. Species like Grass carp would be in a much better position, as food for it could increase. Salinity & water level maintenance in artemia culture ponds is certainly going to become tricky, with higher evaporation rates. Plants would gain on energy on drying of pelleted feeds. Supra tidal green weeds like Enteromorpha intestinalis could become scarce as it could get bleached before its use in aquaculture.

There are both negative and positive impacts due to climate change on aquaculture and fisheries, some examples are highlighted below:

Negative impacts: (a) the rise of temperature which may stimulate macrophyte growth thereby can reduce the amount of fish habitat; (b) the rise of temperature may accelerate algal blooms in water bodies and when algae die-off fish kills can occur due to depletion of dissolved oxygen; (c) increases in temperature and consequence decrease of oxygen supply may affect fishes growth, reproductive success and survival; (d) the hypoxic condition (low levels of dissolved oxygen) may impair fish reproduction, alter reproductive behaviours, reduce fertilisation and egg hatching success and can cause endocrine disruption in fish (increase incidence of malformations, alter sex differentiation); (e) extreme weather events such as floods can change freshwater and brackish water salinity, and may introduce pathogens in to aquaculture facilities; (f) . at higher temperatures there could be an increased frequency of diseases in fish since some diseases in aquaculture often peak at high temperatures such as bacterial diseases; (g) sea level rise could cause loss of land for freshwater aquaculture, and loss of freshwater fisheries (h) ocean acidification may cause effects on calcareous animals including abalone, oysters

Positive impacts: (a) predicted increases in temperature due to climate change can increase the productivity of a body of water (e.g. inland lake) by increasing algal growth, bacterial metabolism and nutrient cycling rates. Growth of algae and other micro-organisms could be beneficial for filter feeding fishes. (b) salt water intrusion into inland (due to sea level rise) may create more area for brackish water aquaculture; (c) seaweed growth can be enhanced (in rising CO2)

Dear Peter, A good overview!

It seems mankind might not succeed in reducing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Adaption to climate change needs to be done. This could be achieved by moving food production into greenhouses like vertical gardens.

Most vertical gardens produce greens. The following link has the design for a combination fish and veggie greenhouse.

Heating the water alone rather than the whole greenhouse as reported in one of comments is an excellent idea. For cooling the water in hot climates, we suggest adding ice cubes from the home refrigerator to the fish tank.
