One of the current research topics is offloading intensive computational tasks towards a fog server. The trend is to make a profit from the powerful capabilities of mobile edge computing to enhance the performance of drones. The main purpose is to save the drone energy and enhance computation delay.
I think one has to investigate the similarities and variations of FANETs with MANETs. Once these similarities and variations are established then researchers can i think use existing protocols models of MANETs and extend them to be applicable for FANETs
Mobility models of nodes in FANETs are one such variation.
Similarly, the simulations tools for MANETs can be extended to be suitable for simulations of FANET scenarios.
