There are numerous studies within the field of communication that examine the variables likely to contribute to a positive stepparent relationship. The variables that account for the most amount of variance include (which lean toward a positive relationship between stepparent and the stepchild): the biological parent is not active in the life of the child, the stepfamily was created when the child was young (5-6 and younger), and the stepparent does not try to usurp or dominate the decisions of the (often residential) biological parent. Are there other variable/contributing factors that you have found when analyzing positive vs. negative stepparent-stepchild relationships?
